Everyone knows Aesop's Fable about the race between the tortoise and the hare. This piece captures The Tortoise and the Hare in ragtime. There are three strains to this rag, in the classic progression: AA-BB-A-CC.
The A strain is the tortoise, a "slow drag". Listen to how he plods along.
The B strain is the hare. This strain is played at the same tempo as the A strain, but appears to move much faster, thus the subtitle: "An Audible Illusion in Ragtime".
And now we'll have a race. The C strain represents the race, and you should hear the mood alternating between the tortoise and the hare.
Who wins the race? Who cares? It's fun and it's ragtime!
