This 'classic' piano rag tells the story of one of my earliest recollections, that of going to the Hollywood Park racetrack as a small child with my dad. Back in the '50s and '60s, there was an industrial plant adjacent to the Hollywood Park property, on the northeast corner of the parking lot. There were two massive smokestacks that whistled high-pitched bursts that were a half-tone different and were slightly out of alignment, so that they would "sing" a pattern in and out of syncopation. This is the inspiration for this rag, and the theme of the smokestacks is followed throughout the piece. There are four strains each dealing with a different aspect of that early racetrack experience, to wit:
