During 1905-1906 Joplin wrote a series of rags with women's names as titles (only one before, Cleopha, in 1902.) Now came Bethena, Sarah Dear, Leola, Antoinette, and my next piece, Eugenia (1906). Scott Joplin was playing in the gentlemen's clubs of St. Louis, and probably took solace there. I think these titles might be taken from the names of ladies of the evening. This is in my opinion Scott Joplin's most complex piece, and has a famous interlude separating each iteration of the last strain. Here's Scott Joplin taking ragtime to another level. |
